Anna - I haven't heard of trimming the leaves of onions. By trimming the leaves there is now less photosynthesis going on and less nutrients going to the fruit, I presume. Onions naturally push themselves out of the ground as they mature. Towards autumn they will be pushed out even more as they dry. There is no need to add more dirt.

I'm curious how your harvest will be now that the leaves are trimmed. Do write back and let us know!
Thanks.

I am growing walla walla onions for the first time they are beginning to come out of the ground, should I cover them with more soil to let them get bigger? I did clip the top leaves to about 3 to 4 inches high to let the nutrients go to the onion. Please help
